Selected images from my “Kokedama” series were painted in 2022 - 2023. The imagery loosely based on my fascination and appreciation of the art of kokedama (a centuries-old Japanese form of garden art that is closely tied to the practice of bonsai. “koke” means moss, and “dama” means ball).
Each painting began with a circular cut paper shape, collaged and “planted” in a 12 x 12-inch square. From there, intuitive explorations with encaustic painting and collage organically sprout to form the kokedama within a controlled composition.
Working on 24 panels, all 24 x24 in 2024.
